Handbook
for healthcare
There are three suggestions in the book
Surviving Healthcare by Pamela Armstrong that should
help readers get more from their healthcare. The
first of these is to choose a health insurance plan
that is most suitable to your needs.
The second
is to select a doctor who is skilled and current
in their knowledge. And last but certainly not least,
consumers must prevent illness through healthier
lifestyle decisions. |
It is the last bit of advice that may prove most
valuable as Armstrong details some of the steps
necessary to get the best care from a system that,
even according to the Institute of Medicine, has
not just gaps of quality healthcare, but chasms. The
author begins by revealing some of the problems
that define the poor state of the healthcare system.
She cites studies that reveal a system that tolerates
excessive deaths from errors and incorrect treatment
and wasted dollars that constitute nearly a third
of US healthcare dollars.
She lists some of the consumers' frustrations with
increasing costs, confusing prescription coverage
and the transitory nature of the doctor/patient
relationship due to plan changes.Armstrong's solutions
reflect her background in the healthcare system,
which includes work in corporations and the government.
Cognizant of the massive changes that have already
occurred, she guides the reader to rethink their
expectations of the system, or dispel the myths
as she calls it, and adapt to these changes through
knowledge, preferably while still healthy.
